Over the past five decades, booking agent Marsha Vlasic, former live-industry executive Claire Rothman, marketing and event producer Pat Shields, and rocker <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/Melissa-Etheridge">Melissa Etheridge</a> have carved out lasting careers, starting at a time when the few women breaking into the male-dominated business were hardly acknowledged, let alone celebrated in the ways they are today.</p><p>The Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter, 57, is best known for songs such as “Come to My Window.” Stepping into national prominence in 1988 with the single “Bring Me Some Water,” she gave a voice both to women in rock during a male-dominated time for the genre and to the LGBTQ community after she came out in 1993.</p><figure><img alt="Claire rothman photographed on nov. 13, 2018 at apotheke la in los angeles. She now stays busy as a board member for City of Hope and other organizations.</p><p>Currently a partner in Black Dot, a multimedia entertainment company offering services in marketing and event production, Shields helped promulgate black music during its first major renaissance in the 1970s and '80s. As vp marketing for Warner Bros. Records' black music division, she worked with <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/quincy-jones">Quincy Jones</a>, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/al-jarreau">Al Jarreau</a> and <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/chaka-khan">Chaka Khan</a>. Earlier in her career, she operated her own agency, MVO, which she sold to ICM Partners in 2008. After working as ICM's senior vp concerts, she joined AGI in 2014. These ladies' perspectives are as vital as ever.</p><p><strong>What prompted you to pursue a career in an industry that didn't exactly welcome women?</strong><br><strong>VLASIC</strong> It wasn't a planned situation. I came from a very poor family and had to work after high school. My first job was for Frank Loesser, the playwright. From there I ran the office for some manager-producers who represented go-go girls. One of them was Goldie Hawn, before she left for Hollywood. [These guys] were crazy. They had a casting couch. Whatever you've heard, they did. I stayed there five or six years, then joined the American Talent International music agency, where I worked for three agents -- also insane. One of them was leaving to manage <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/deep-purple">Deep Purple</a> and [wanted me] to go with him as his assistant. The bosses said, “No, you can stay and become an agent.” I was the luckiest person on the planet. I didn't have music education. I still don't know a good guitar player from a bad one. With me, everything was done on instinct.</p><p><strong>ROTHMAN</strong> People of my generation really didn't plan their careers. Much like Marsha, I was a pencil pusher who was recruited by the Spectrum [arena] in Philadelphia, my hometown. It was the time when the National Hockey League expanded from six to 12 teams and a lot of new venues came up. The Spectrum was one. Two weeks after I took the job, it filed for bankruptcy. I was newly divorced, with one kid in college and one in high school. I thought, “Oh, God, what did I do?” But in five years, we brought the Spectrum out of bankruptcy. We paid 100 cents on the dollar, and I wrote out every check. We formed one of the first partnerships with Electric Factory Concerts. When I got out of college, I went to a station and was told that they didn't have anything, but there was a job at their radio station, WNEW-AM [in New York], which was playing Julius La Rosa and <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/shirley-bassey">Shirley Bassey</a>. I was a black girl fresh out of school. I didn't know who these people were, but I took the job. I started talking to promotion people as they came in and found out Atlantic was looking for a secretary. I said, “I went to college. I'm not going to be a secretary.” They said, “You better get your foot in the door.” [Atlantic vp black music] Henry Allen hired me to work for the national promotion director.</p><p><strong>ETHERIDGE</strong> I went through the '60s and '70s growing up in Leavenworth, Kan. After graduating from high school, I played in country bands around Kansas City, basically behind chicken wire. I started out singing <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/tammy-wynette">Tammy</a><a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/tammy-wynette">Wynette</a>'s “Stand by Your Man,” but I wanted to be a self-contained artist. I went to Berklee College of Music for a few weeks, then began playing in a restaurant. I was able to make enough money to live [in Boston] for a couple of years. When I was 21, I moved to Los Angeles. This was 1982. I had visions of L.A. being <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/joni-mitchell">Joni Mitchell</a>, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/neil-young">Neil Young</a>, the <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/eagles">Eagles</a>. Then I got there and it was all hair and spandex. [<em>Laughter.</em>] So I started doing what I could. They either have a memory or they've taken that song into their heart. Blues originators like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, both openly bisexual, helped form the foundation of what would become R&B and rock‘n’roll. In the 1920s and early ’30s, Prohibition’s end gave way to the “Pansy Craze”: cabaret drag performances that brought gay nightlife to the masses and carried their aesthetics into mainstream musical theater. In the mid-’30s, at the edge of the Great Depression, moral backlash—sometimes disguised as economic conservatism but usually explicit in its bigotry—shut down many of these clubs and formally criminalized gay sex at a scale that had never before been seen. The closet door, which hadn’t even existed as we know it now, slammed shut.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.6em; font-size: 18px; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: Tiempos, Georgia, serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">This didn’t stop LGBTQ+ musicians from shaping American pop culture. Even in the prescriptive world of ’60s pop, where teen rebellion was anticipated and pre-packaged, there were artists like Lesley Gore and Dusty Springfield. In fact, Springfield was one of the first pop icons to come out to the public (as bisexual, in 1970)—and, notably, she covered Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” as subversive a song as there ever was, on her debut album. The ’70s brought glam and disco, gender play, and explicitly queer nightlife back to the mainstream; we can’t forget that decade’s great gay pop icon, Elton John, and its great bisexual ones, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Despite its great appeal to many a very hetero man, many of punk’s early groundbreakers were LGBTQ+, from Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, who was never shy about his sexuality, toDarby Crash of the Germs, who was sadly closeted during his short life. Undergirded by punk’s jagged energy and the electric, over-the-top styles of glam and disco, new wave made space for unconventional queer personalities and for pop to address the AIDS crisis. Most of the songs here are by LGBTQ+ artists, with a few exceptions we included because they were too notable not to; most of our critics who wrote these entries are LGBTQ+, as well. But this is not in any way meant to be a definitive list; the field is just too wide to narrow to 50 songs.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.6em; font-size: 18px; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: Tiempos, Georgia, serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Instead, we’re trying to tell as many stories within this community as we can. We’ve tried to get as big a range as possible, though, from classic chart-toppers to genre notables from hip-hop, punk, house, and so on—and we’ve also gotten some wonderful musicians to reflect on their personal soundtracks, too.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.6em; font-size: 18px; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: Tiempos, Georgia, serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Pride month itself has a number of meanings and uses: a party, a chance to reflect on our history and think about the challenges we have in the present and going forward, a reason to connect with others and think about how all of us view community, a fierce legacy of radicalism and liberatory praxis. There are millions of different ways to be LGBTQ+, after all. I hope you find something meaningful in this list—a history you might not have known, a song you loved that you’d forgotten about, a new favorite—and that you’re able to tap into the powerful well of emotions that pop can engender in us and let that push you on. Let’s get free.</p><p>____________</p><p>Four years before Ellen DeGeneres’ famous “<a href="http://time.com/4728994/ellen-degeneres-1997-coming-out-cover/">Yep, I’m Gay</a>” <em>Time</em>magazine cover, Melissa Etheridge defiantly declared <em>Yes I Am</em>, as both the name of her fourth studio album and a thinly veiled response to the rumors that had been dogging her since the beginning of her career. Where the record’s title may have been coy, its hit single, “Come to My Window,” was anything but: a scorching mid-tempo ballad of longing, heartache, and dependency.</p><p>The iconic video for “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaY5-LGYJKc">Come to My Window</a>” stars a young Juliette Lewis, in a tank top and shag haircut, screaming the song’s lyrics while suffering a mental breakdown in a dingy psych ward. She writhes and splutters in her bed, dramatizing Etheridge’s comparatively subdued delivery—until near the end of the bridge, when Etheridge lets out a guttural wail to match her white-hot desire. But a number of celebrities with their own brands to sell are seeing green all the same. Our Cover Story is reported by Ben Tracy:</p><p>Hollywood has long been addicted to a good marijuana joke. And now that pot is legal for recreational use in nine states (with more on the horizon), some celebrities are laughing all the way to the bank...</p><p>Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge is getting in on the act, from the ground up; she calls 47 acres in California's Santa Cruz Mountains Etheridge Farms.</p><p>Tracy said, "It's one thing to use this, it's one thing to be an advocate for it. Why did you want to go into the business?"</p><p>"I wanted to be in the front of this because I feel that there's not a representation for middle-aged women in the cannabis industry," Etheridge replied.</p><p>This new business venture is personal. Etheridge says <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cannabis-infused-wine-delivers-a-full-body-buzz-says-melissa-etheridge/">she discovered the healing power of marijuana</a> during painful chemotherapy sessions after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004.</p><p>"And so they gave me, like, super-duper-duper chemo, which was really, really horrible," Etheridge said. "Especially in your gastrointestinal system. So immediately, as soon as I took the first chemo, and you start feeling it by the end of the night, I smoked. And you get instant relief from nausea, and you have an appetite."</p><p>For Etheridge, pot isn't just about getting high; it's about getting healthy – and, she says, the product grown here will have strict standards.</p><p>"It's pesticide-free," she said. "It's the quality, and it's measured out. You're gonna be able to understand what the dosage is. Like The Way I Do became one of rocks great live songs, a cant miss, in your face anthem that brought a new passion every night.</p> <p>Etheridge was unquestionably a star in the making. Of course, as rock history has seen, a strong debut does not guarantee a lengthy career. However, in this instance, all of that potential was delivered on and then some. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.</p> <p><strong>GOAL:</strong><br /> The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.</p> <p><strong>OBJECTIVES:</strong><br /> The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nations most valuable resources our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.</p> <p><strong>ACTIVITIES:</strong><br /> The principal Toys for Tots activity which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. Shes working on her new album, playing various shows, planning a cruise, yet she still makes time to give back.</p> <p>In 1996, Paul Wallem, Melissa father-in-law, started a museum that displayed and educated folks about the history of airplanes. At its inception, the museum consisted of a single room office located in an Illinois airports engine shop. Today, the Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum consists of Pre-World War II planes and automobiles exhibits and fills multiple airplane hangars. They offer various educational and outreach programs, scholarships and are very involved in the community. While Paul is no longer running the museum, he still serves as the primary museum advisor and is a major supporter.</p> <p>Knowing that all non-profits need funds to continue, and that this is something near and dear to Lindas fathers heart, Melissa and Linda contacted the general manager, Judi Zangs, and offered their time and talents for a fundraiser! And the idea was born. A concert for just 125 people inside the hanger!</p> <p>On the evening of Oct 21^st, in Poplar Grove, Illinois, we enjoyed cocktails and hors doeuvres while awaiting Melissa and Lindas arrival. When they got there, Melissa took the time to personally meet with each and every one of us! It was so wonderful to see all the smiles that evening, as many of the attendees met Melissa for the very first time. She sure got a ton of hugs that night!</p> <p>The concert was amazing! Melissa played some rarities as well as couple of the hits. Robin was on the Melissa Etheridge cruise and I had the pleasureof getting to know her and her story while on board, as did Melissa.</p> <p>The Melissa cruise was magical, in so many ways, friends were made, there were incredible musical performances, and some very special people were aboard the ship. You see, Libbys Legacy is based in Orlando and is just one block from Pulse night club. When the tragedy occurred at Pulse, Robin jumped into action to help however she could. So when <a href="http://www.flyingdutchmentravel.com/">Flying Dutchman Travel</a>, the Melissa cruise charter, wanted to donate some cabins to charity, Robin was the perfect fit with her connections to Pulse and Libbys Legacy. She was given forty free cruises to donate to Pulse night club & breast cancer survivors. And she did, without hesitation, saying she felt like Oprah Winfrey exclaiming, You get a cruise! And you get a cruise! as she gave people the good news.</p> <p>While we were at sea, Melissa & Linda lead a breast cancer discussion which included the topic of health and wellness. Some of what they spoke about was eating organically, acid vs. alkaline diets and drinking tons of water. During the question and answer period, Robin stood up and began talking about different ideas she had and ways to help breast cancer patients who cant afford healthy food. She mentioned a project she was working on called the Pink Garden Project. It involves growing healthy, organic food in community gardens, plots that are tended to by survivors, for survivors. Melissa was excited andintrigued and said emphaticallys going to change the world!"</p> <p>Well, this past week, Melissa was performing in Florida and during one of her days off she and her wife, Linda droveup to Orlando to visit with Robin and volunteer at Libbys Legacy. During their time in Orlando, Melissa, Linda and Robin walked over to Pulse night club and paid their respects.
