I work in an office of 8 women...I put a flyer up in the kitchen about Breast Cancer Awareness and sent an email with the link to click for mammograms...then I started talking to them...out of 8 only 2 of us have had our annual mammogram...I got the other 6 to schedule theirs!!! WOO HOO!!! One little person CAN make a difference!! I am now working on the entire company...approximately 400 women!!! - Janet B.
My plan was to sell soda and water at local summer events. I contacted WalMart who generously donated 500 cases of water to my cause. I also received 500 cases of Pepsi Products from Shop and Stop. I was given free table spaces at the events I attended. We raised over $7000.00 in two events (two 2 day events). This was a great way for me to get involved and I am proud to have done it and proud to still contribute and participate in other fund raising events. - Marie W.
| I walked for the cure in Wilmington, Delaware with all of my co-workers. I lost my sister on Oct.4th 2004 [age 51] and ever since have been very active in lots of fund raiser concerning Breast Cancer!! I remember very clearly hearing Melissa's news on the T.V. during this time. - Kelly B. |

I have sent out emails to raise breast cancer awareness and encourage many woman where I work (the Dept of Education) to do the same. Also when I speak to children on my job at the Dept of Education where I am a food service manager, I emphasize the facts of good health and good nutrition and how that all ties into being healthy and avoiding illnesses such as cancer. - Lea T.
I'm participating in Pinktober by being the caretaker for my friend Rosalee Harris, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 weeks ago. I took her to the first of 6+ treatments on October 1st and plan to take her to all of them in support of her recovery. She was diagnosed with an early detection from her annual mammogram; something that all women should take seriously. - Joni E.
I am physically unable to walk in the "3 day walk" so I am volunteering with a group of supporters on Nov 15th to hand out water, encouragement and dry clean socks to the walkers - Cindy D.
My partner is a breast cancer survivor, and I am happy to say, doing wonderful after 8 years! I organize the Komen Race for the Cure for my company in the largest walk in the Country in Dallas, Texas.....where the race started. Back in 1997, I started walking in the race for the cure, and it was only a few hundred people, starting at a baseball field. Now, they average over 30,000 people! I find that volunteering for this event is very worth while and rewarding. - Kim M.
I attended Melissa's Pinktober performance at the HRC, purchased a Pink Ribbon pin, and wear it every day. I walked in Denver's "Walk for the Cure" on October 5th. I called in and contributed to the "Stand Up To Cancer" telethon. I have special pink Colorado breast cancer awareness license plates on my car. - Rebecca E.
I spread the word about breast cancer awareness everyday among my patients and coworkers. I am a physical therapist working almost exclusively with breast cancer patients who have lymph edema which is swelling in the arm as a consequence of cancer surgery or radiation treatment. I have spoken about Melissa's cancer with several patients. It doesn't matter if they have never heard one of her songs.....they know about Melissa's battle and tell me what an inspiration she has been for them in their journey. My patients and I will continue to spread the word about breast cancer prevention and I especially will continue the fight to educate people about lymph edema. - Sandy W.
I'm a school psychologist in Haysville, KS. My sisters and I lost our mother to breast cancer. We do the walks and runs each year. I raise money working with my neighborhood fund raisers on this issue. Also purchase as much pink merchandise as possible. I've been able to get some of our high school students involved with the "pink" cancer awareness issues... and I work with a group of students who are dealing with grief issues because of family losses to cancer... as well as their own fears that it might happen to them. - Jessie T.
I'm trying to help in a small way by doing walks and a couple of fundraisers. I've also purchased over 100 pink bracelets from the Pink Bracelet Fund and given them out to so many people, especially those affected by breast cancer. - Donna D.
I received my cancer diagnosis Nov 2, 2004. After 8 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, and more radiation than I can count, I participate in every walk I can. The first walk I attended after my treatments I took one of the M.E.I.N. guitar picks with me and walked in her honor and mine as survivors! I can remember hearing the news of Melissa's diagnosis while waiting for my own. I received calls from friends telling me to turn on the Grammy's and see a beautiful bald Melissa performing her heart out......while I was lying in bed sick from a recent chemo treatment! What an encouragement it was to see her and to not feel alone! Melissa, you are an inspiration to all! - Patricia H.
I am a 5 year Survivor as of Dec 18.08. I decided I was going to help other's facing BC, so they would never feel alone like I did when I went through treatment.... I joined The Y-Me (network) and organized a family team to raise money to help individual's so they will never have to face breast cancer alone again! Also I am a Reach To Recovery Volunteer with the American Cancer Society. This is so rewarding and a fulfilling in my life just knowing I can help another person go through this difficult time and they can call me at anytime they need to talk or need a friend. - Tammy B.
On August 2, 2008 there was a fundraiser held called Pink On The Links (Golf Outing) in Vincennes, IN. I volunteered to assist with the American Red Cross First Aid Station for the event. It raised over $50,000 to be divided the between Susan B Komen Foundation and the local hospital breast center. - Kim E.
My work has organized a walk and although I have sponsored several of the walkers in my department. I also took the Making Strides Pledge and forwarded it to a ton of my friends!! Of course I am wearing my Melissa Pink Ribbon bracelet! For years I have been going to various sites and clicking everyday to help women in need get free mammograms, I also send the link out every October to my address book to get more people to click. - Julie S.
| I created my "FELT" candle just after hearing of Melissa's breast cancer. I called it "FELT" because it was where Melissa and Tammy met, and I thought if anything this would be the beginning of change and of healing. I've raised hundreds of dollars alone with this candle over the years, choosing to place donations to The Susan Love Foundation because they don't test on animals. - Kel K. | ![]() |
My partner and I helped run a charity function twice yearly locally near us in the UK. We split the funds between the local hospice and our local breast cancer group. All donations are used to buy food for women who can't get out or are having financial problems due to their illness. We have raised money for this organization for quite a few years; we even gave them all our wedding gifts we asked people just to donate to the charity. We have raised now $60,000 for charity. Also, our record store donates a lot of the raffle prizes and auction items. - Angie & Dawn
I wear breast cancer pins and shirts, I carry a breast cancer bag. I just bought everyone breast cancer recyclable bags to put in everyone's stockings; I click on the link everyday and encourage others too. When someone passes away I donate to the breast cancer society instead of sending flowers. I encourage all women to get their mammograms every year. I have the Breast cancer link on my space and facebook. - Wendy W.
I am currently going through breast issues. I just had a lumpectomy, and I'm waiting for results. What I have done to help, is to make myself available to go with my single friends to their first mammograms if they are nervous. I also do a lot of research on the internet and email what I found to all of my friends. I also raised money to pay for a mammogram for a neighbor who couldn't afford one. - Tracy E.

I walked for breast cancer in my local city here in Canada on October 5th - Dawn T.
Along with participating in runs & walks for years for the benefit of breast cancer research, I take part in weekly safety meetings which include wellness topics for 70+ employees. The past 23 years my dogs (& cats!) have been used in Pet Therapy for breast cancer patients and survivors. This involvement includes being a trainer for prospective pets as Pet Therapy animals. Plus providing visits upon request either at the family residence, extended living center, or hospice facilities. This labor of love has brought the Pet Therapy animals (and owner) to grade & middle schools to introduce the importance of Pet therapy; and local community events. - Patty H.
I lost my Dad to lung cancer over 20 years ago; he was only 58 yrs old. I took care of him at home and with the great help of hospice we tried to make his last months comfortable. I am 47 now and I try to instill a healthy lifestyle for my teenage son, my loved ones and myself. The Awakening and Melissa's new Christmas album, Melissa has opened my eyes to new ideas about life. She opened my heart to change myself for the better, for my family, for every one I meet and for my own health. The mind and body go hand and hand and both need to stay healthy to fight off cancer together. - Linda S.
I donate and sponsor other walkers in the Breast Cancer Walks. In my field of work, I have worked with Mammographer and Breast Cancer patients for 16 years. I now currently work in MRI performing and working with breast cancer patients with Breast MRI and Breast biopsies. I have committed to working with Breast Cancer patients and have been able to provide comfort during some terrible times. - Bernadette J.

I live in Mallorca, Spain. I did a call out to my girlfriends and we had a "Think Pink Party." We had something to eat and to drink while we talked about the different topics of breast cancer awareness. They also took a copy of each subject home to read again in their own time. I gave each of them a MLE Pink Bracelet, which I had ordered a week before, a pink ribbon and a bookmark I had collected from a department store where they handed them out to the people. The bookmark said "The Fight Against Breast Cancer" and listed the different cosmetic companies that are supporting " The Breast Cancer Research Foundation". - Katja S. | |
